Alarm Malfunction Checklist

If your smoke alarm keeps going off, check for the following:

  • Excessive dust/debris build up. Use compressed air to clean surfaces.
  • Change the battery.
  • Check the date of manufacture, which is located on the back of the unit. Units ten years old or older should be replaced as they do expire.

Smoke alarms may be battery powered or hard wired. Most homes built after 2004 feature hard wired units. We recommend calling an electrician for assistance with hard wired units as they are wired into the home’s electrical system and/or the alarm system.

Protect your family and follow these safety tips in your home!

  • Test smoke alarms once a month by pressing the “test” button.
  • If the unit is battery powered, change the battery once a year.
  • Have a home escape plan and practice it with your family.
  • Know two ways out of every room in the house.
  • Make sure exits are not blocked.
  • Familiarize children with the sound of the smoke alarm and show them how to get low under smoke.
  • Assign one family member to assist elderly relatives or those with specific needs out of the house.
  • Choose a meeting space away from the home for family members to meet.
